The Kuya Raymi, or fertility festival, is an ancient celebration that the indigenous villages of the Ecuadorian Sierra commemorate every September 21, but this is not all that Kuya Raymi means.
The Kuya Raymi constitutes one of the four most significant celebrations of the Andean agroecological calendar. It represents the beginning of life and exalts women as the maximum representation of fertility related to the fertility of the pachamama.
The indigenous peoples of the Sierra Norte of Ecuador are preparing to commemorate this raymi with various activities. In Ibarra, seeds and dance, as an element of expression and resistance, will be the central elements of the festival.
