The origin of Boers comes directly from the Dutch language popularly also known as Dutch. Thus, literally translating from Dutch to Spanish the meaning of Boers would be “Farmer or farm worker”.

It should be noted that today the name Boers is used rather to designate members of the white skin ethnic group in South Africa.

For this reason, it would be a mistake to think that those who are called Boers are literally peasants as their translation says.

Now, to understand more deeply it is the term we must examine its history and connotation.

Boers History

This term was born as a name given to Dutch nationals who migrated to African territory specifically south of the continent.

This migration occurred during the 17th and 18th centuries when Captain Jan Van Riebeeck began an expedition to the African coast.

Later in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries England arrived in the Dutch territory in Africa which in the future would generate several armed conflicts.

One of the milestones in the history of the Boers was the well-known ” War of the Bores ” which was read against the British Empire.

This war was fought between 1899 and 1902, ending in the defeat of the Bores and the victory of England.

As a consequence of this, the disappearance of two of the Bóeres republics existing up to that date Orange and Transvaal occurred.

As a curious fact, the language spoken today by the Boers is Afrikaans , this language is a derivative of the Dutch spoken by the first settlers.Other meanings that may be of interest:
